What the form is for
Form W-7 is used to apply for or renew an IRS individual taxpayer identification number. The IRS describes an ITIN as a nine-digit number for people who need a U.S. federal taxpayer identification number but do not have and are not eligible for an SSN.
Why Tax Paperwork stops here
- ITIN packages can require original documents or certified copies from issuing agencies.
- Many applications are attached to a federal tax return unless an exception applies.
- Eligibility, document validity, country facts, dependent facts, and exception categories are high-risk support topics.
Tax Paperwork should not ask users to upload passports, birth certificates, national IDs, tax returns, or W-7 packets into support or an account.
Education-only boundary
Tax Paperwork does not prepare Form W-7 packets, review identity documents, route users to acceptance agents, or collect ITIN application materials. Use this page only to understand why those cases should stay with official IRS instructions or a qualified professional.
